Andros is only 6 sea miles from Evia, but the heavy currents
and winds require a longer ferry journey than would be otherwise
necessary emphasising its island status. Although the climate
and the architecture are typical of the Cyclades, the greener
scenery and the vineyards appear to announce the proximity to
Evia and the mainland. The capital town of Hora is perched on
an eastern outcrop and is characterised by Patritian houses
dating back to the XVIII-XIX centuries; a ruined Venetian castle
used to dominate from the top of the peninsula. A small archaeological
museum in the town gathers finding from Zagora and Paleopoli.
The island offers beautiful beaches such as Xylokarida, Kipri
and Psili Ammos. Other beautiful beaches are Kolona, Stivari,
Delevoya and Agia Marina.
In the south, there is Batsi, the most developed and cosmopolitan
village of the island. It has a well organized sandy beach with
shallow waters suitable for small children.
There is a good selection of tourist facilities including water
sports and in particular those favoured by the wind such as
windsurfing are very popular.
