Milos, the most southern of the Cyclades, has a particular
horseshoe shape and is an inactive volcanic island.
Milos has something to offer to everyone, ideal for those in
search for a relaxing holiday and lively for those in the mood
for an intense break. The island, in fact has an intense nightlife
without spoiling the peace of certain areas in touch with nature.
There is a good selection of hotels, apartments, rooms and studios
in every village and a large number of restaurants, tavernas,
bars and clubs.
Milos is famous for the numerous beaches characterised by clear
water and golden sand. Especially worth a visit are the beaches
of Sarakiniko, which is probably the most beautiful on the island,
Provatas, Paleohori, Apollonia, Emporios and Adamas. Next to
the archaeological site of Filakoti, in the village of Apollonia,
three consecutive caves by the name of Papafraga can be accessed
by boat; it is an ideal spot for swimming.
Most beaches offer tourist facilities such as water sports and
sea-taxis that take you on excursions to remote bays.
In the northern part of the island the Arkoudes, large volcanic
rocks in the shape of bears are impressive.
The most ancient traces of life on the island were uncovered
in Filakopi: three different settlements built over each other
at different epochs dating back to the III-II millennium BC,
showing imposing fortifications, regularly lined streets, stone
houses and a palace of the Minoan type.
Around Milos, an excursion to the islet of Kimolos is strongly
advised; this arid and mountainous small island doesn’t
have many tourist facilities but is certainly a spectacle of
nature with its very white sandy beaches and its town dating
back to the XIV century as a fortified village with its houses
set in terraces to form a defence structure.
When visiting Milos take the time to visit the archaeological
museum in Plaka, the catacombs and the ancient theatre in Tripiti,
the archaeological site in Apollonia as well as the ancient
temples spread all over the island in proximity to the villages.
