Syros lies at the heart of the Aegean Sea with a surface of
84 sq. km. and has approximately 20.000 inhabitants.
Its capital and port, Ermoupolis, is built amphitheatrically
on two hills covered by neoclassical buildings, mansions and
white washed houses, with the commanding town hall and the church
of Anastassi overlooking the town.
Touring around the island of Syros you will come across many
villages of unique natural beauty with picturesque corners where
the local traditions have been kept alive from generation to
generation. To mention but a few Possidonia and Finikas, both
mentioned by Homer, are worth a visit; Ano Syros, the scenic
"Ano Sira" as the locals call this unique village,
features walls, narrow streets and arches that maintain its
medieval form almost intact.
During summer folkloristic exhibitions take place and every
two years the Apanosyria, a manifestation including cultural
events, theatrical plays and concerts is an added bonus. There
is a good selection of hotels and tourist facilities all over
the island and in the tavernas you can enjoy a traditional meal
at the sound of local songs.
