An interesting walled city on the sea, Monemvasia makes a pleasant
afternoon excursion. Access to the city is through a narrow
gate followed by walkways that climb slowly around the hill.
Filled with stone walks, small houses, and good restaurants
and shops, Monemvasia with its mere 78 inhabitants is an intact
medieval corner in the heart of Laconia. The suggestive hamlet,
fortified by the Byzantines and the Venetians, was once an important
commercial port. Today the population doesn’t reach 100
people, but its character is certainly an attraction to tourists.
Take a walk up the hill to see the town's fortifications, an
old church, and a wonderful view of town and its setting on
the water. There is a variety of fine restaurants where to enjoy
a relaxing lunch.
